Prime Minister Donald Tusk appointed Dr. hab. Marek Cierpiał-Wolan as President of Statistics Poland (Główny Urząd Statystyczny, GUS), effective January 1, 2025.
Dr. hab. Marek Cierpiał-Wolan is a professor at the University of Rzeszów. He completed doctoral studies at the Warsaw School of Economics (SGH), where he earned a PhD in Economics in 1999, and in 2023 he obtained the post-doctoral degree (habilitation) in the discipline of Economics and Finance from Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. He also completed postgraduate studies in statistics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Rzeszów.
He is a research and teaching professor in the Department of Quantitative Methods and Business Informatics at the Institute of Economics and Finance, University of Rzeszów. He teaches statistical inference and econometrics. His scientific research focuses primarily on econometric modeling, the use of big data in statistical research, and the methodology of integrating data from multiple sources. He has lectured and completed teaching and research fellowships at numerous international academic institutions, including Staffordshire University (UK), University of California, Berkeley (USA), North China University of Technology (China), and Kyung Hee University (South Korea).
He has served as project leader and expert in many national and international research projects, including:

He is also coordinator of the methodological team of the World Health Organization (WHO) and Statistics Poland, responsible for developing a methodology for studying the health of refugees, which received recommendation from the UN Statistical Commission.
He is a member of the European Commission’s Task Force on the Use of Mobile Network Operator Data for Official Statistics, as well as the Expert Group on Refugee, IDP and Statelessness Statistics.
Dr. Cierpiał-Wolan is the author of over 150 publications in national and international journals and publishing houses, and has served as a reviewer for more than 50 scientific articles in international journals. Since 2016, he has been Editor-in-Chief of “Wiadomości Statystyczne – The Polish Statistician”, Scientific Editor of the quarterly Statistics in Transition new series, and editorial board member of international journals, including the Ukrainian Statistics of Ukraine and Economic Forum, and the Slovak Perspectives. Journal on Economic Issues.
He is Vice-President of the Main Council of the Polish Statistical Association, one of the oldest statistical societies in the world, and a member of the Scientific Council of the Carpathian Euroregion, an association supporting the development of cross-border regions in Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, and Hungary. He has organized and actively participated in numerous national and international scientific conferences.
From 2008 to 2024, he served as Director of the Statistical Office in Rzeszów.
