Mieczysław Bieniek

Deputy NATO Strategic Commander 2010-2013, retired general of the Polish Army

He joined the Polish Army as an Officer Cadet in 1969.

From 1978 to 1981 he attended the Polish Armed Force General Staff Academy. Upon graduation he served as chief of G-3 Plans of 6th Airborne Division. In 1985 he assumed a command of the 16th Airborne  battalion.

In 1989, he was appointed as COS and then Commander of the Polish Contingent  on the Golan Heights. Then he served also in  UN Mission in Western Sahara as a Chief of Operations.

In 1994,  he assumed the command of 6th Airborne Brigade in Cracow. Then he graduated  Roya College of Defence Studies in London , followed by command of 25th Air Cavalry Division. In 1998 he took over Nordic-Polish Brigade Command in B&H. In 1999 he was assigned as Chief of Exercise Branch in Supreme Headquarter Allied Power Europe in MONS.

In May 2002, he became Deputy Commander of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps  -Turkey. Then in 2004 he commanded Multinational Division Central-South in Iraq . Afterwards he was appointed as 2nd Polish Corps Commander. In 2007 he was in Afghanistan, where he served as an advisor to Minister of Defense of Afganistan.

In April 2009 he was appointed as the Polish Military Representantive to the NATO and EU Military Committees in Brussels. In 2010 he assumed the position of Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk -Virginia and promoted to the rank of general. He retired from active service in 2014 and now he is a senior councilor in the Polish Armament Group as well as professor of the Cracow Frycz Modrzewski Academy.

He holds a PhD of International Security from Polish NDU (National Defense University). He is also an author of the many articles and books about International security and strategy as well as cyber and energy security.

In addition to English he is also fluent in Russian.
