Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski PhD is a Polish engineer and European Space Agency (ESA) project astronaut who, in June 2025, flew to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), leading the first Polish national scientific and technological mission to the ISS—Ignis. During his two-week stay in orbit, he carried out a program of scientific experiments, technology demonstrations, and educational activities, prepared in collaboration with Polish institutions and international partners, strengthening Poland’s position in European and global space exploration.
The Ignis mission marked a breakthrough moment for the Polish space sector, combining advanced scientific research, technology demonstrations, and extensive outreach activities. As part of the mission, experiments were conducted in the fields of nanomaterials, engineering, biotechnology, and human physiology and psychology.
Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski is a graduate of the Lodz University of Technology and the Université de Nantes, where he earned his master’s degrees with honors in 2008. That same year, he also completed his engineering studies (Diplôme d’Ingénieur) with honors at the École Polytechnique de l’Université de Nantes. In 2011, he earned his Ph.D. with honors from the Université d’Aix-Marseille, specializing in the design of radiation-hardened systems for space applications.
