Position: Rector

Rector of the Silesian University of Technology in the term of office in years 2016-2020, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in years 2012-2016.

He graduated from the Mechanics and Machine Design major at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Silesian University of Technology in 1987. In 1992, he participated in a 6-month-long scientific training at Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby, and in 1993 he took part in a 2-week-long course at NATO Advanced Study Institute on Computer Aided Analysis of Rigid and Flexible Mechanical Systems in Portugal.

In 1994, he defended, with honours, his doctoral dissertation in the discipline: Construction and exploitation of machines, and he defended his habilitation dissertation, also with honours, in front of the Board of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 2002. In 2007 the President of Poland granted him the title of professor in the field of technical sciences.

Since 1993, Professor Mężyk has been a member of the Polish Society for Computational Mechanics, and since 1994 a member of the Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. For many years, he was also participating in the works of the Board of the Gliwice Section of the Society, performing, among others, duties of the chairman of the Gliwice Section.

In 2011, chosen by the Congress of Delegates of the Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, he acted as the Chairman of the Society in years 2011-2015. For his achievements in the field of science, he received, among others, an Individual Award of the Minister of National Education (1995), a prestigious award of the 4th Department of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2003), the team award of the Minister of National Education and Sport (2005).

In 2009, the Management Board of the Warsaw Section of the Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics honoured him with the academic prize of Witold Nowacki, and in 2011 he was awarded with the prestigious BUMAR SHIELD prize for the best development project of the BUMAR Group.

In 2008 he was appointed by the Minister of Treasury to the Scientific Council of the OBRUM Research and Development Centre in Gliwice, where, since 2009, he acted as the technical director, and after the reorganization as the director of development until 2011.Currently, he is an adviser to the Chairman of ROSOMAK S.A. He was one of the initiators of creating the Centre of Advanced Technologies of Security and Defence at the Silesian University of Technology, which he managed in 2014-2015.

 

Additionally, he has been or was a member of Scientific Councils of:

●       The Centre of Polymer and Carbon Materials in Zabrze – since 2015

●       The KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology in Gliwice – since 2015

●       The Industrial Research Institute for Automation and Measurements in Warsaw – 2011-2016

●       The Military Institute of Armament Technology in Zielonka – 2015-2016

 

For the second term now, since 2011, Professor Mężyk has been a member of the Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Machinery Construction Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and in 2011-2015 he participated in the works of the Council of Scientific Societies at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In years 2014-2016 he was the Vice-President of the College of Deans of Mechanical Faculties.

Scientific achievements: 180 publications in scientific journals, as well as national and international conference materials, 6 scientific monographs, 13 patents, 1 industrial design, 9 patent applications, 14 completed doctoral theses as a supervisor. Furthermore, he prepared 25 reviews of doctoral dissertations, 14 reviews in habilitation proceedings, 10 reviews in proceedings for granting the title of professor and about 30 reviews of articles for foreign and international journals. The main research areas are: machine dynamics, mechatronics and the design of military vehicles.
