EEC 2019

Keynote speech: Structural Lag: The Future of Work at Risk

15 May 2019 • 11:30-12:00 • Domino Stage

Thematic scope

  • Klaus Schwab’s prescient work, The Fourth Industrial Revolution, focuses on advances in communication and connectivity rather than technology. Barriers to communication and connectivity can be traced to what Matilda Riley calls structural lag— Outmoded social institutions failing to provide opportunity for its members who represent a growing population with expanding influence and economic power. It occurs when popular philosophy falls behind technological and economic advances. I argue that we are leading in the 21st Century with a 20th Century mind-set. Artificial Intelligence garners much of the print when it comes to contemplating the future workforce but the ability or inability of organizations to adapt to the needs of the now and future worker will be the real story. In this session we will explore the future of work with respect to: 1) The redefinition of relationship to authority 2) The need of new metrics for productivity 3) The barriers to knowledge transfer
