Stop!Smog
Before the EU accession we were often quoting in Poland beautiful words of John Paul II about "Europe breathing with both lungs". However now, nearly 15 years after that dream came true, Europe still has – literally - a problem with breathing. Every year diseases caused by smog are killing 400 000 of Europeans, of which 45 000 in Poland. In order to fight against this “silent killer” we need a complex strategy, efficient legislation and serious funds. While the EU is coming with concrete proposals and innovative solutions, there is a need to strengthen social awareness about the problem. Art is one of the ways to cope with it. This is why I organised the contest and exhibition "Stop!Smog" presenting posters by engaged Polish artists. Their courageous and unsettling works show citizens’ concerns about environment and represent their call for a clear, healthy air for all – Jerzy Buzek – Chairman of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, President of the European Parliament (2009-2012), Prime Minister of Poland (1997-2001)
